Derek is so right on that, the last vert rail i hit was about 8 steps but it still felt amazing, I always prefer to land on horizontal then go down the vert bit of a rail if it has a kink :P Theres just one thing I don't understand about the video of this, how does he manage to keep really slow and in controll while hes going down and doing a frontside. If I was to ever try that rail I would be going uncontrollably fast as soon as I got past the 1st kink.
aha, that's a great question, and here's the answer.
the difference between "pro" soapers and uncontrolled soapers is a grind plate modification.
all of this control comes from grinding down then inside and outside of your plates. i mean way way down so that when you lean in or out a little rubber will actually be on the rail.
so to go fast, you keep your feet frontside, then to slow down you just tweak your feet a bit. if you've ever watched oNe or tWo you can actually hear the shoes squeaking a little bit... that's the rubber on the rail.
method 1: the first time i did it, i found a peace of "dragon skin" it's this super super rough metal "sandpaper" with 1 sticky side. i wrapped the dragon skin around 2" rail (most rails are 1.5" so i wanted it to be a little wider). then i just rubbed my shoe across it in both ufo and royale positions until it was down far enough.
method 2: just find a really rough ledge and do the same thing.
Thanx brookx that's a sick technique. Now I'll be able to use the brake pads on shoes like the boltar, and the tweaked grinds will become much easier. I just got new grindplates, what a way to wreck them =P
