ACTUALLY....a royale is dependent on only that the back foot is torqued over...the bending of the knees is to distribute your weight to the back to keep your balance. if i stand straight up and down and torgue my back foot i am still doing a royale...it might not look nice but its still a royale.

royales are a trick from rollerblades.... rollerblades originally had high cut, hard cuffs, which forced royales to come from knee bends, with no ankle movement... now, ankle movement is needed to make a stylish royale, but the majority of the style and the dependence of the trick SHOULD come from the knee... as for the pics that derek pointed out, aaron and darren seem to be the only ones doing what i said in my first comment

this is the the FIRST picture of an actual royale on soaps that i have seen on the internet (with the exception of relate and dunk, who also can do royales... oh, and i guess sam from rsc)... everyone else is just bending their ankles... the actual royale trick is dependant on knee bending, the ankle bending is just a side effect of sorts, most people seem to do it the other way around
